The Joe Ushie Poetry Prize is an annual literary award recognizing outstanding poetry that reflects creativity, depth, and originality. Named in honour of distinguished poet and academic Joe Ushie, the prize aims to encourage and celebrate poetic excellence.
2. Who is Joe Ushie?
Joe Ushie is a renowned Nigerian poet, scholar, and professor known for his significant contributions to African literature and poetry. His works often explore themes of social justice, identity, and human resilience. His poetry collections include Popular Stand (1992), Lambs at the Shrine (1995), Eclipse in Rwanda (1998), Hill Songs (2000), A Reign of Locusts (2004), Tsunami Blues (2007), and Yawns and Belches (2018).
3. Who can apply for the prize?
The competition is open to Nigerian poets aged 18 and above, irrespective of publication status.
4. Is there an age limit for participants?
Entrants must be at least 18 years old at the time of entry.
5. Do I need to be Nigerian to submit my work?
Yes. The competition is only open to Nigerian poets, irrespective of place of residence.
6. What type of poetry is accepted?
The Joe Ushie Poetry Prize accepts original, unpublished poems across various themes and styles.
7. How many poems can I submit?
Entrants can only submit a maximum of three poems, and each must be no more than fifty lines.
8. What format should I use for my submission?
Poems should be submitted in a 12 pts Times New Roman font, double-spaced and saved as a PDF document.
9. Can I submit previously published work?
No. The Joe Ushie Poetry Prize only accepts original, unpublished work.
10. Is there a submission fee?
No, the Joe Ushie Poetry Prize does not charge a submission fee.
11. Who judges the competition?
A panel of esteemed poets, writers, and literary scholars evaluates the submissions based on originality, artistic merit, and thematic relevance.
12. What is the prize for the winner?
The Prize comes with a $500 (USD) cash award and a plaque. All shortlisted poems will also be published in a poetry chapbook.
13. Are there runner-up prizes?
The final runners-up will get Honourable Mention, and all shortlisted poets will be published in the Prize chapbook.
14. When are the winners announced?
The Prize will be awarded on 20 January 2026 during a dinner in honour of Joe Ushie.
15. How will I know if I’ve won?
Finalists will be contacted via email and published on the website and on other social media platforms. Only finalists will be invited to the award ceremony. The winner will be announced during the ceremony.
16. Will I receive feedback on my submission?
Due to the volume of entries, it is impossible to give individual feedback to each entrant. However, shortlisted poets might receive comments from the judges.
17. Can I edit my submission after sending it?
No. Submissions are considered final once sent. Be sure to proofread your work before submission.
18. Can I submit poetry in a language other than English?
Submissions are to be made in English. However, poets may incorporate a reasonable number of words from other languages as part of their poetic expression.
